Most of the world is covered in water, but what landforms are under that? Plains, mountains, canyons, and plateaus are all covered up by water. Almost 360 million square kilometers or 71 percent of Earth's surface is covered by water, making nicknames like the "blue planet" or the "water planet." Continents and islands make up only 150 million kilometers or 29 percent of Earth.
There are four main ocean basins that the ocean can be divided into, the Pacific ocean, the Atlantic ocean, the Indian ocean, and the Artica ocean. The Pacific Ocean is the largest and deepest ocean that covers more than half of the ocean surface area on Earth and has an average of 3940 meters in depth. The Atlantic Ocean is about half the size of the pacific and is not as deep. Compared to the Pacific it is very narrow. The Atlantic and Pacific both border North and South America. The Indian Ocean is only a little bit smaller but has about the same average depth as the Atlantic. The Indian ocean borders Africa, India (or Asia), and Australia. It is almost entirely in the Southern Hemisphere. The Arctic ocean is only seven percent the size of the pacific. It is not a deep as the other oceans either. All that we know about these oceans is known as oceanography.
Oceanography is a branch of Earth science that studies the ocean. It uses the methods and knowlede of chemistry, physics, biology, and geology to study the ocean. Before the 1800's, the ocean was not an important focus of study, and because of the many advances in technology, more scientists are able to study and learn about oceanogreaphy. In this website, you will learn about how to map the ocean floor, what is used to map the ocean floor, and what different landforms are at the bottom of the ocean.
